Haaretz - Israel News - Shards of memory (Haaretz Daily)
This is the most Arab-free area in Israel. It was the scene of total ethnic cleansing, which left not a vestige apart from the heaps of ruins and the sabra bushes. On the coastal plain, between Jaffa and Gaza, not one Palestinian village remains intact.
Alan Civil
first non-German to be approached by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra to become a member. Civil stuck with the Philharmonia however, who were reshaping themselves into the New Philharmonia. In 1966 he became principal hornist of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, remaining there until his retirement in 1988. As a soloist, Civil recorded the horn concertos of Mozart, and his recording of Benjamin Britten's Serenade for tenor, horn and strings with Robert Tear is also quite well known. He also played chamber music in the Alan Civil Horn Trio. As well as his work in classical music, Civil played the horn solo on the Beatles song "For No One" from their Revolver album. Civil taught at the Royal College of Music. He was awarded an OBE in 1985.
Symphony No. 40 (Mozart)
C major, K. 551, in the space of a few weeks in 1788. Like No. 41, this symphony was never performed in Mozart's lifetime. Its movements display the typical classical sonata form: Molto allegro Andante Menuetto: Trio Allegro assai The first movement begins darkly with a pulse in the violas, soon joined by the first subject. This technique of âdroppingâ the listener immediately into the action, foregoing a formal introduction, would become a favorite technique of the Romantics. Examples of this technique used in Romantic music include the first movement of Mendelssohnâs Concerto for Violin, or the first movement of Rachmaninovâs Piano Concerto No. 3. A remarkable portion of the work occurs in the fourth movement, at the beginning of the development section, in which every tone in the chromatic scale

Between 1928 and 1930 he took further instruction from Artur Schnabel in Berlin. then studied under Wanda Landowska and Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He toured throughout Europe and the United States. He was knighted in 1977. Curzon was particularly well known for his interpretations of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert. In his earlier years he had been noted for his championing of modern music - Lennox Berkeley's Piano Sonata is dedicated to him.
