Piano Sonata No. 11 (Mozart)
Piano Sonata No. 11 (Mozart) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major, K. 331 is in three movements: Andante grazioso - a theme with six variations Menuetto - a minuet and trio Rondo alla Turca: Allegretto The last movement, a rondo, is often heard on its own, and is one of the most well known of all Mozart's works. It imitates the drums and melodies of Turkish Janissary bands, the music of which was so in vogue at that time. Various other works of the time imitate the music, including Mozart's own opera The Abduction from the Seraglio. Charles Rosen
(born May 5, 1927) is an American pianist and music theorist. Rosen has carried out a double career. As a virtuoso pianist he has appeared in numerous recitals and orchestral engagements around the world, and has recorded a number of 20th century works at the invitation of their composers, including works by Igor Stravinsky, Elliott Carter, and Pierre Boulez. Rosen is also the author of many widely admired books about music. Perhaps his most famous work is The Classical Style (2nd ed., 1997, New York: Norton), which analyzes the nature and evolution of the high classical style as it was developed by Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. Sonata Forms (2nd ed., 1988, New York: Norton) is in some ways a follow-up on The Classical Style: it is
Wilhelm Kempff
and the "Poet of the piano", Kempff is celebrated today for his recordings of Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Franz Schubert, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Liszt and Frederic Chopin. He had a long recording career with Deutsche Grammophon spanning sixty years. Kempff's recordings of the complete Beethoven and Schubert piano sonatas are regarded as some of the greatest ever made. His recordings of Schumann, Brahms, Liszt and Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 (with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and Ferdinand Leitner) are also critically acclaimed. Kempff also played chamber music with Yehudi Menuhin and Pierre Fournier among others. Particularly famous are the recordings of the complete Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano with Menuhin. He was also one of the most celebrated teachers of his time. A
String quartet
almost always refers to a group consisting of two violins, one viola and one cello. This combination of instruments is widely seen as one of the most important forms in chamber music, with most major composers writing string quartets. The form first came to be used around the middle of the 18th century, Joseph Haydn being one of the first composers to develop it. Indeed, he is often referred to as "the father of the string quartet" (as well as being called "the father of the symphony"). Haydn played his compositions in a string quartet of which Mozart was also a member. Many other chamber groups can be seen as modifications of the string quartet, such as the piano quintet, which is a string quartet with an added piano; the string
