Second half of program makes DSO a winner (Detroit News)
In the spirit of "Jarvi Fest," as proclaimed on posters placed around the lobby and inside Orchestra Hall, this weekend's Detroit Symphony Orchestra classical subscription program might be viewed sympathetically as a family affair.

Muzak left a sour note with listeners (Coventry Evening Telegraph)
Transport chiefs spent £5,000 on muzak in Coventry's bus station in the hope that it would curb anti-social behaviour. But bus users turned a deaf ear to the piped music and the plug has been pulled on the scheme in Pool Meadow.

Pierre Boulez
26, 1925) is a conductor and composer of classical music. He was born in Montbrison, France. He studied music at the Paris Conservatoire under Olivier Messiaen and Andrée Vaurabourg (Arthur Honegger's wife). He went on to write atonal music in a post-Webernian serial style greatly influenced by Messiaen, serialising not only the pitches of notes, but also the durations, dynamics, accents, and so on. He became one of the philosophical leaders of the post-war movement in the arts towards greater abstraction and experimentation. His works include a number of instrumental and vocal works including Le marteau sans maître for ensemble and voice, Pli selon pli for orchestra and voice and Rituel: In Memoriam Bruno Maderna for orchestra divided into eight groups. Following the lead of figures such as Pierre Schaeffer and
Arthur Fiedler
was the long-time conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra, a symphony orchestra in Boston, Massachusetts that specialized in popular entertainment more than "fine art". With a combination of musicianship and showmanship, he made the Pops the best-known orchestra in the country. Some criticized him for watering down music, particularly when adapting popular songs or edited portions of the classical repertoire, but Fiedler deliberately kept performances informal, light and often self-mocking to attact more listeners. Fiedler's father was an Austrian-born violinist who played in the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and his mother was a pianist and musician. He grew up in Boston until his father retired and returned to Austria, where he studied and worked until returning to Boston at the start of World War I. In 1915 joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra
