The most important composer in the development of the form was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who, like many later composers, played the solo part of his works in many concerts. Manuel de Falla
23, 1876 - November 14, 1946) was a Spanish composer of classical music. He was born in Cádiz. From the late 1890s he studied music in Madrid, studying piano with José Tragó and composition with Felipe Pedrell. It was from Pedrell that de Falla became interested in native Spanish music, particularly Andalusian flamenco (specifically canto jondo), the influence of which can be strongly felt in many of his works. Among his early pieces are a number of zarzuelas, but his first important work was the one-act opera La vida breve (Life is Short, written in 1905, though revised before its premiere in 1913). He spent the years 1907 to 1914 in Paris, where he met a number of composers who had an influence on his style, including the impressionists Maurice Ravel,
George Crumb
24, 1929) is an American composer of classical music. He is noted as an explorer of unusual timbres. Biography Crumb was born in Charleston, West Virginia, and began to compose at an early age. He studied music first at the University of Illinois, and then briefly in Berlin before returning to the United States to study at the University of Michigan. Crumb has made his living from teaching. His first teaching job was at a college in Virginia, before he became professor of piano and composition at the in 1958. In 1965 he began a long association with the University of Pennsylvania, becoming Annenberg Professor of the Humanities in 1983. He retired from teaching in 1997, though in early 2002 was appointed with David Burge to a joint residency at Arizona
Gerard Hengeveld
(1910 - 2001) was a Dutch classical pianist, music composer and educationalist. He is especially known for his compositions of study material for piano. Other compositions include two piano concertos, a violin sonata, and a sonata for cello. Hengeveld was an able interpreter and performer of the music of Bach for piano and harpsichord. He gave regular concerts in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Some of his concerts were captured on record. Gerard Hengeveld died on Sunday, October 28, 2001 in Bergen, the Netherlands. He was 90 years old.
