teacher, Gulda began learning to play the piano from Felix Pazofsky at the age of 7; in 1942, he entered the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied piano and musical theory under Bruno Seidlhofer and Joseph Marx. After winning first prize at the International Competition in Geneva four years later, in 1946, he began going on concert tours throughout the world. Together with Jörg Demus and Paul Badura-Skoda, Gulda formed what became known as the "viennese troica". Although most famous for his Beethoven interpretations, Gulda also performed the music of J. S. Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Chopin, Debussy and Ravel; he also cultivated an interest in Jazz from the 1950s on, writing several songs and instrumental pieces himself and also combining Jazz and classical music in his concerts at times. organism which, like a fruit, was capable of colour and sweetness". This title alludes to the protagonist's conditional negativistic responses to feelings of evil which prevent the exercise of his free will. The book was inspired by an event in 1944, when Burgess' pregnant wife Lynn was robbed and beaten by four US soldiers in a London street, which aborted the pregnancy.³ Warning: Wikipedia contains spoilers. Set a few years in the future, it follows the career of a teenager, Alex. His main pleasures in life are classical music and random acts of violence (actually, "ultraviolence"). Eventually Alex is caught and "rehabilitated" by a program of aversion therapy, which, though rendering him incapable of
Pentatonic scale
Pentatonic scale In music, a pentatonic scale is a scale with five notes per octave. Pentatonic scales are found all over the world: in the tuning of the Ethiopian krar and the Indonesian gamelan, in the melodies of African-American spirituals and of composer Claude-Achille Debussy. One of the most common pentatonic scales, sometimes called a major pentatonic scale, can be constructed in many ways. A simple construction takes five consecutive pitches from the circle of fifths: if starting on C, {C, G, D, A, E}. This leads to a Pythagorean scale of {1/1, 9/8, 81/64, 3/2, 27/16}. A more complicated construction, derived from Western European classical music, begins with a major scale and omits the fourth and the seventh scale degrees: a C major scale is {C, D,
Romantic music
Romantic music Romantic music can be defined as music in which expression of feelings is given more importance than formal balance and internal order. The use of the phrase in this sense is generally limited to the context of European classical music. Although there are moments of pieces through history where this can be said to be the case, it became the dominant musical trend in classical music during the 19th century, and the period roughly from 1800 to 1900 is often called the "romantic period". Many composers after 1900, however, have continued to write music in a style typical of the romantic period. Although the word "romantic" is now usually used to mean "something related to love", "romantic music" as spoken about by musicologists and academics
