Russian Wins Van Cliburn Piano Contest (WJLA-TV Washington D.C.)
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Russia's Alexander Kobrin, 25, won the gold medal Sunday night at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, a prestigious 17-day contest known for launching classical music careers. The silver medal went to Joyce Yang, 19, a native of South Korea.

Symphony No. 40 (Mozart)
C major, K. 551, in the space of a few weeks in 1788. Like No. 41, this symphony was never performed in Mozart's lifetime. Its movements display the typical classical sonata form: Molto allegro Andante Menuetto: Trio Allegro assai The first movement begins darkly with a pulse in the violas, soon joined by the first subject. This technique of “dropping” the listener immediately into the action, foregoing a formal introduction, would become a favorite technique of the Romantics. Examples of this technique used in Romantic music include the first movement of Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Violin, or the first movement of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3. A remarkable portion of the work occurs in the fourth movement, at the beginning of the development section, in which every tone in the chromatic scale

Alberti bass
Alberti bass is a particular kind of accompaniment in music, often used in the classical music era. It was first used by Domenico Alberti, after whom it is named. Alberti bass is a kind of broken chord or arpeggiated accompaniment, where the notes of the chord are presented in the order lowest, highest, middle, highest. This pattern is then repeated. A well known example is found at the beginning of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Piano Sonata, K 545: Alberti bass is usually found in the left hand of pieces for keyboard instruments. However, it is sometimes found in instrumental pieces, Bela Bartok using it towards the end of his String Quartet No. 5, for example.
