Edvard Grieg
the Danish composer Niels W. Gade, Grieg is noted as a nationalist composer, drawing inspiration from Norwegian folk music. Early works include a symphony and a piano sonata. He also wrote three sonatas for piano and violin, and his many short pieces for piano led some to call him the Chopin of the north. Grieg is probably best known for his incidental music to the play Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen, and for his Piano Concerto in A minor. Other notable works include: Holberg Suite (for string orchestra) Ten volumes of Lyric Pieces (for piano)
Evgeny Kissin
piano studies at age two, and entered the esteemed Gnessin School of Music for Gifted Children. He first studied there with Anna Pavlovna Kantor. At the age of 10, Kissin made his orchestral debut and the year after that he gave his first recital in Moscow. Kissin's talents were manifested to the international scene in 1984, when he played Chopin's two piano concertos with the Moscow State Philharmonic. On September 30, 1990, Kissin made his Carnegie Hall recital debut . Among many other pieces, he has recorded Sergei Rachmaninov's 2nd and 3rd piano concertos and Mozart's 12th and 20th piano concertos. He is considered by many musicians as one of the top pianists in the world.
Karol Szymanowski
a Polish composer and pianist. Szymanowksi was born in Ukraine. He studied music privately with his father before going to the Elizawetgrad School of Music and, from 1901, the State Conservatory in Warsaw (he was later director there for a few years at the end of the 1920s). He travelled widely, throughout Europe and to the USA. He died in a sanatorium in Lausanne. Szymanowski's was influenced by the music of Richard Strauss, Max Reger, Alexander Scriabin and the impressionism of Claude Debussy. He also drew influence from his countryman Frederic Chopin and Polish folk music, and like Chopin he wrote a number of mazurkas for piano (the mazurka being a Polish folk dance). Wilhelm Kempff
20th century and the "Poet of the piano", Kempff is celebrated today for his recordings of Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Franz Schubert, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Liszt and Frederic Chopin. He had a long recording career with Deutsche Grammophon spanning sixty years. Kempff's recordings of the complete Beethoven and Schubert piano sonatas are regarded as some of the greatest ever made. His recordings of Schumann, Brahms, Liszt and Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 (with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and Ferdinand Leitner) are also critically acclaimed.
