Mazurka
classical composers have written examples, with the best known Fryderyk Chopin's for solo piano. In the 1920s, Karol Szymanowski wrote a set of twenty for piano. In Swedish folk music, the quaver or eight-note polska has a similar rhythm as the mazurka, and the two dances have a common origin. The dance was also common as a popular dance in the United States in the late 19th century. In the U.S. Southern States it was sometimes known as a Mazuka. See also polonaise
Edvard Grieg
Edvard Grieg Edvard Hagerup Grieg (June 15, 1843 - September 4, 1907) was a Norwegian composer of Scottish descent. He was born and died in Bergen. Educated at the Leipzig Conservatory, and later by the Danish composer Niels W. Gade, Grieg is noted as a nationalist composer, drawing inspiration from Norwegian folk music. Early works include a symphony and a piano sonata. He also wrote three sonatas for piano and violin, and his many short pieces for piano led some to call him the Chopin of the north. Grieg is probably best known for his incidental music to the play Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen, and for his Piano Concerto in A minor. Other notable works include: Holberg Suite (for string orchestra) Ten volumes of Lyric Pieces
Wilhelm Kempff
Italy. Truly one of the greatest pianists of 20th century and the "Poet of the piano", Kempff is celebrated today for his recordings of Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Franz Schubert, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Liszt and Frederic Chopin. He had a long recording career with Deutsche Grammophon spanning sixty years. Kempff's recordings of the complete Beethoven and Schubert piano sonatas are regarded as some of the greatest ever made. His recordings of Schumann, Brahms, Liszt and Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 (with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and Ferdinand Leitner) are also critically acclaimed. Kempff also played chamber music with Yehudi Menuhin and Pierre Fournier among others. Particularly famous are the recordings of the complete Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano with Menuhin. He was also
Carly Simon
father was Richard Simon (co-founder of Simon & Schuster), an accomplished pianist who often played Chopin and Beethoven at home. She was raised in the Riverdale neighborhood of New York City and had two sisters and a brother. After an unsuccessful attempt at launching a career with her sister Lucy (the Simon Sisters), Simon released Carly Simon in 1971 (see 1971 in music), which contained "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be", a Top Ten hit. Her major breakthrough, though, was 1972's (see 1972 in music) No Secrets, which included "You're So Vain". The single was a hit, and aroused much speculation about who the song was about, with many rumors pointing to Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones, who sang back up on the recording.
