About Chopin
I have five lessons to give today. Ironically, Chopin didn't care much for the music of his illustrious contemporaries even though many were friends or acquaintances. Chopin's use of rubato must have been a miracle of subtlety and taste.

Eugene Istomin
Stern and Leonard Rose, known as the Istomin-Stern-Rose Trio, with whom he made many recordings, and particularly of music by Beethoven, Brahms and Schubert. He also played with them in orchestral music, with conductors such as Eugene Ormandy, Bruno Walter and also as a soloist. His earliest public performances were from age 6 with his mother, and at 12 he entered the Curtis Institute. He studied under Rudolf Serkin and also Mieczyslaw Horzowski. In 1943 he won the Leventritt award, and also the Philhadelphia Youth Award. He made his debuts with the Philadelphia Orchestra with Eugene Ormandy, playing a concerto by Chopin, and the New York Philharmonic conducted by Artur Rodzinski playing Brahms 2nd concerto in the same week in 1943. He won a Grammy Award in 1970 with the trio,

Karol Szymanowski
a Polish composer and pianist. Szymanowksi was born in Ukraine. He studied music privately with his father before going to the Elizawetgrad School of Music and, from 1901, the State Conservatory in Warsaw (he was later director there for a few years at the end of the 1920s). He travelled widely, throughout Europe and to the USA. He died in a sanatorium in Lausanne. Szymanowski's was influenced by the music of Richard Strauss, Max Reger, Alexander Scriabin and the impressionism of Claude Debussy. He also drew influence from his countryman Frederic Chopin and Polish folk music, and like Chopin he wrote a number of mazurkas for piano (the mazurka being a Polish folk dance). Among Szymanowski's better known works are his two violin concertos, the three Myths for violin and piano,

Bolero
Spain in the late 18th century and is danced by either a soloist or a couple. It is in a moderately slow tempo, and is performed to music which is sung and accompanied by castanets and guitars. It is in triple time, and usually has a triplet on the second beat of each bar. A number of classical composers have written works based on this dance: Frederic Chopin wrote a bolero for solo piano, and Maurice Ravel's Bolero is one of his most famous works, originally written as a ballet score but now usually played as a concert piece.
