The gift of dance (New Orleans Times-Picayune)
"Now take your time," murmured Myra Mier, coaxing the nth degree of artistry out of the ballerina's movements as the young dancer glided across the studio at the Myra Mier School of Ballet in Kenner. "That's it. Pli - é, ré-le-vé," she said, syllables in sync with the music's beat.
Teacher's pupil: her own right hand (Boston Globe)
In the spring of 1989, Sarah Haera Tocco seemed well on her way to realizing her dream of becoming a concert pianist. She had earned bachelor's and master's degrees at Manhattan School of Music and had been favorably mentioned in The New York Times after performing as an accompanist at Carnegie Hall.
Wilhelm Kempff
20th century and the "Poet of the piano", Kempff is celebrated today for his recordings of Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Franz Schubert, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Liszt and Frederic Chopin. He had a long recording career with Deutsche Grammophon spanning sixty years. Kempff's recordings of the complete Beethoven and Schubert piano sonatas are regarded as some of the greatest ever made. His recordings of Schumann, Brahms, Liszt and Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 (with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and Ferdinand Leitner) are also critically acclaimed. Kempff also played chamber music with Yehudi Menuhin and Pierre Fournier among others. Particularly famous are the recordings of the complete Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano with Menuhin. He was also one of the most celebrated teachers of his

piano studies at age two, and entered the esteemed Gnessin School of Music for Gifted Children. He first studied there with Anna Pavlovna Kantor. At the age of 10, Kissin made his orchestral debut and the year after that he gave his first recital in Moscow. Kissin's talents were manifested to the international scene in 1984, when he played Chopin's two piano concertos with the Moscow State Philharmonic. On September 30, 1990, Kissin made his Carnegie Hall recital debut . Among many other pieces, he has recorded Sergei Rachmaninov's 2nd and 3rd piano concertos and Mozart's 12th and 20th piano concertos. He is considered by many musicians as one of the top pianists in the world.

three years old. Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Liszt, Frederic Chopin, Robert Schumann, and Sergei Rachmaninov were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play. Most western forms of music can make use of the piano. Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including jazz, classical music, and all sorts of popular music. Social history of the piano
and early 19th centuries, pianos were financially beyond the reach of most families, and the pianos of those times were generally the property of the gentry and the aristocracy. Visiting music masters taught their children, more often the girls than the boys, to play the piano. It was widely felt at the time that ability to play the piano made young women more marriageable. Women who had learned to play as children often continued to play as adults, thus providing music in their households. For instance, Emma Wedgwood (1808-1896), the granddaughter of the wealthy industrialist Josiah Wedgwood, took piano lessons from none other than Frédéric Chopin, and apparently achieved a fair level of proficiency. Following her marriage to Charles Darwin, Emma still played the piano daily, while her husband listened appreciatively.
