About Chopin
The supreme painters of the time, Delacroix (painter of the most famous Chopin portrait) and Ingres lived there as did many great composers including Liszt, Rossini, Berlioz and the important pianists Kalkbrenner, Thalberg and Herz. Chopin as early as 1831 expressed his "perhaps too audacious but noble wish and intention to create for myself a new world." And so he did. Through his aristocratic Polish friends, Chopin knew the influential Rothschilds and soon could set up a teaching studio that was his primary support and allowed him to live in an elegant style for most of his short life.

Wilhelm Kempff
and the "Poet of the piano", Kempff is celebrated today for his recordings of Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Franz Schubert, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Liszt and Frederic Chopin. He had a long recording career with Deutsche Grammophon spanning sixty years. Kempff's recordings of the complete Beethoven and Schubert piano sonatas are regarded as some of the greatest ever made. His recordings of Schumann, Brahms, Liszt and Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 (with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and Ferdinand Leitner) are also critically acclaimed. Kempff also played chamber music with Yehudi Menuhin and Pierre Fournier among others. Particularly famous are the recordings of the complete Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano with Menuhin. He was also one of the most celebrated teachers of his time. A

Nocturne
piano, the nocturne was cultivated primarily in the 19th century. The first nocturnes to be written as such were by John Field, but the most famous exponent of the form was Frederic Chopin, who wrote 21 of them. Later composers to write nocturnes for the piano include Gabriel Fauré and Erik Satie. Other examples of nocturnes include the one for orchestra from Felix Mendelssohn's incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream and the set of three for orchestra and female choir by Claude Debussy (who also wrote one for solo piano). The first movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata has also been considered a nocturne (certainly, Ludwig Rellstab, who gave the piece its nickname, thought it evocative of the night), although Beethoven did not describe it as one. Nocturnes are

Pauline Garcia-Viardot
she married Louis Viardot, an author and the director of the Théatre Italien in Paris, who would eventually manage her career. Renowned for her wide range and her dramatic roles on stage, Garcia's performances inspired composers such as Frederic Chopin, Hector Berlioz, Camille Saint-Saëns, and others. While she never considered herself a composer, she in fact composed a number of songs and also assisted with the writing of music for the roles that were created specifically for her. Later in life, after retiring from the stage, she wrote an opera titled Le dernier Sorcier. Extremely intelligent, she spoke fluent French, Italian , Spanish, English, German and Russian, and composed songs in a variety of national techniques. Her career took her to the best music halls across Europe, and from 1843 to

Krystian Zimerman
the Katowice Conservatory under Andrzej Jasinki. He career was launched when he won the prestigious Warsaw Chopin Piano Competition in 1975. His American debut came in 1979 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He has since toured widely and made a number of recordings. Since 1996 he has taught piano at the Academy of Music in Basel. Zimerman is best known for his interpretations of Romantic music, but has performed a wide variety of classical pieces, including some contemporary works (he gave the British premiere of Witold Lutoslawski's Piano Concerto in 1989, for example, and has recorded the work).
