About Beethoven
Beethoven seems to address his own destiny and place in the universe with a biblical directness that evokes Job. While he probably could have survived by other means, he received financial support from a number of interested nobleman, but without sacrificing his independence. He was truly a child of the revolutionary spirit that was spreading through Europe, and the first important composer to openly declare himself an artist serving a higher calling than the court or aristocracy.

Luigi Cherubini
15, 1842) was an Italian composer. Although his music is not well known today, Cherubini was greatly admired by his contemporaries. Beethoven considered him to be the greatest dramatic composer of his time. Cherubini was born in Florence. His instruction in music began at the age of six with his father, himself a musician. By the age of thirteen, he had composed several religious works. From 1778 to 1780, he studied music in Bologna and Milan. In 1788, Cherubini settled in Paris. In the years following, he met with only partial success as an opera composer. His first major success was Lodoïska (1791) which was admired for its realistic heroism. This was followed by Médée (1797), which is Cherubini's best known work, and Les deux journées (1800). However, his works had

events compounded with Mahler's general superstition and fear of death, he was convinced that he would soon die. In an attempt to cheer Mahler up, a friend gave him a copy of Der chinesische Flöte (The Chinese Flute), an edition of ancient Chinese poetry translated into German by Hans Bethge. Mahler was very taken by the verses and chose seven (two of which are combined into one movement of music) to adapt into a song-symphony. But there arose another problem. Mahler had already finished his 8th Symphony, and with all the other things that had happened, he was even more frightened by the "Curse of the Ninth," the fact that Bruckner and Schubert and Beethoven had not gotten past nine symphonies. Convinced that a Ninth Symphony would kill him, Mahler proceeded

Isaac Stern
his family moved to San Francisco when he was a year old. He had his first music lessons from his mother, and entered the San Francisco Conservatory at a very early age in 1928. There he studied the violin. He was proud to have been the student of Nahum Blinder. His public debut came on February 18 1936, when he played the Violin Concerto No. 3 by Camille Saint-Saëns with the San Francisco Symphony conducted by Pierre Monteux. Stern was famous for his great recordings and his championing of younger players (among his discoveries were Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Pinchas Zukerman). He recorded concertos by Brahms, Beethoven and Mendelssohn among others, as well as more modern works by Samuel Barber, Bela Bartok, Igor Stravinsky, and Leonard Bernstein. He also dubbed

H. C. Robbins Landon
6, 1926) is a musicologist. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts and studied music at Swarthmore College and Boston University. He subsequently moved to Europe where he worked as a music critic. From 1947 he did research in Vienna on Joseph Haydn, a composer on whom he would become a noted expert. His book Symphonies of Joseph Haydn was published in 1955, with the five volume Haydn: Chronicle and Works following at the end of the 1970s. He also edited a number of Haydn's works. Robbins Landon has published work on other 18th century composers, including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven and Antonio Vivaldi. Writings This list is incomplete.
