About Beethoven
For 4 years he was a violist in the court. It is to Beethoven that we owe the full emergence of the symphony as a repository for a composer's most important ideas. Many of the final works contain fugal sections of a very personal nature within sonata forms.

posted 05-30-2005 11:42 AM quote: Originally posted by shostakovich: Hi Big. I'm sticking by my statement. Guys before Vivaldi are not heard REGULARLY by the GENERAL PUBLIC. I listen to radio a lot, and they aren't there. They are not at symphony concerts or piano recitals because they didn't write for orchestra or piano. I'm not knocking them or excluding them from the classical definition as understood by most people. Earlier music may be getting more popular, but "EXTREMELY POPULAR" is a stretch at least outside of your academic environment. Can we find some way to blame our disagreement on Bush?

Leader: Beethoven (Guardian Unlimited)
Leader: From the gaiety of his early trios to the shock and awe of the late quartets, Beethoven is the most universal of composers.

Dylan Evans: Beethoven was a narcissistic hooligan (Guardian Unlimited)
Classical: The composer was certainly a genius, but he diverted music from elegant universality into tortured self-obsession.

Sonata form
is a musical form, a way of organising a work of music. The original idea of a central organizing form has been very widely used by classical composers since the 18th century, and was originally described by an Italian theorist as "a two part form" each part was repeated. By the early 19th century, Carl Czerny, a student of Beethoven's described it in terms of themes, which is how it is generally still described today. It was also considered to be the standard form for the first movement of any important work of instrumental music, for example a symphony, concerto, sonata or other works based on them, such as string quartets. For this reason, it is sometimes called first movement form, although this is somewhat of a misnomer, as it has

Glenn Gould
Ontario. After being taught piano by his mother, whose grandfather was a cousin of Edvard Grieg, Gould attended the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto from the age of ten. There he studied piano with Alberto Guerrero, organ with Frederick C. Silvester and theory with Leo Smith. In 1945 he gave his first public performance (at the organ) and the following year made his first appearance with an orchestra (the Toronto Symphony Orchestra) in a performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4. His first public recital followed in 1947 and his first recital on CBC radio came in 1950. This was the beginning of a long association with the radio and with recording in general. On April 10 1964 Gould gave his last public performance in Los Angeles, California, to concentrate

John Ireland
some cultural distinction. His parents died soon after he had entered the Royal College of Music at the age of 14. He studied piano and organ there, and later composition under Charles Villiers Stanford. He subsequently became a teacher at the College himself, his pupils including Ernest John Moeran (who admired him) and Benjamin Britten (who found Ireland’s teaching of less interest). He also worked as organist and choirmaster at St. Luke’s Church, Chelsea, London. He retired in 1953, settling at Sussex for the rest of his life. From Stanford, Ireland inherited a thorough knowledge of the music of Beethoven, Brahms and other German classics, but as a young man he was also strongly influenced by Debussy and Ravel as well as the earlier works by Stravinsky and Bartók.
