About Beethoven
Many of the final works contain fugal sections of a very personal nature within sonata forms. It is perhaps his early rebellion against the arbitrary strictness of a father who wanted to exploit his son's talents that formed Beethoven's strong and difficult personality. In his slow movements, music expressed a mystical exaltation which even Mozart had never approached.

Classical: The composer was certainly a genius, but he diverted music from elegant universality into tortured self-obsession.

REVIEW / Cleveland Orchestra stays in first gear (San Francisco Chronicle)

Guardian Unlimited | Arts features | Beethoven was a narcissistic hooligan
Beethoven certainly changed the way that people thought about music, but this change was a change for the worse. From the speculations of Pythagoras about the "music of the spheres" in ancient Greece onwards, most western musicians had agreed that musical beauty was based on a mysterious connection between sound and mathematics, and that this provided music with an objective goal, something that transcended the individual composer's idiosyncrasies and aspired to the universal.

“Music in Time,” Spoleto Festival USA’s 15-year-old series of contemporary classical music, is no doubt ambitious. But founder John Kennedy has said that while the series shakes up listeners, it’s more than 12-tone music and nonstop cacophony. It’s accessible. It’s beautiful. It’s emotional.
