About Bach
Two hundred and fifty years later, Schumann, great student of Bach that he was, would declare that in the chess game of music melody is the queen but the game depends on harmony, the king. The latter was in turn influenced by the "broken style" of the French lutenists who found a way to suggest more than one part within a single line. One need look no further than any of the Bach keyboard suites - the so-called French Suites (such as the French Suite No.4 in Eb, BMV.815), English Suites (for example, the English Suite No.3 in G: 1.Prélude; 2.Allemande; 3.Courante; 4.Sarabande; 5.Gavottes I and II; 6.Gigue), and the Partitas (No.1 in Bb; No.2 in C; No.3 in A; No.4 in D; No.5 in g; and the No.6 in E) to see the comfortable juxtaposition of a French Allemande with an Italian Corrente, followed by a French Saraband overlaid with flamboyant, Italian operatic ornamentation.

Newport News-Times: New York concerto performer opens Sunday Piano Series at the Performing Arts Center
Pirone received his bachelor of music degree from Queens College, where he studied with Leon Pommers. He later won a scholarship to The Julliard School and completed his master's degree under Joseph Raieff. It was at Julliard that Pirone was first given Bach's "Organ Prelude in Fugue," transcribed for piano by Liszt, as a concert piece - and the piece with which he will open the June 12 concert in Newport. "Joseph Raieff assigned it to me and said one day it would be a great program opener; it is, and I have used it before," Pirone said. Following Julliard, Pirone took a two-year break before earning his Ph.D. from New York University.

first in Dresden and then Leipzig. He later moved to Munich where he taught at conducted the Munich Bach Choir and Munich Bach Orchestra. He conducted a wide range of music, but is best remembered today for his interpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach music. He avoided the fluctuations in tempo which was one characteristic of the prevailing Romantic manner of conducting Bach, but otherwise made no attempt to be historically authentic in his performances, using modern instruments right to the end of his career.

Goldberg Variations
Johann Sebastian Bach, originally written for the harpsichord but nowadays frequently performed on the piano. It was probably written around 1741 for Count Hermann Karl von Keyserlingk; it was performed for the count by his talented young harpsichordist Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, after whom the work was ultimately named. A popular story regarding the piece is that Count Keyserlingk suffered from insomnia, and Goldberg would often play him Bach's variations to lull him to sleep--or perhaps, given the absorbing character of the work, simply to help him pass the night. The aria on which the variations are based may or may not be by Bach himself. It appears elsewhere in the notebook of music owned by Bach's second wife Anna Magdalena Bach. After a statement of the aria the beginning of the
