Passacaglia
A passacaglia (less frequently passecaille) is a form of music. Its name derives from the Spanish pasar (to walk) and calle (street). Originally a slow Italian or Spanish dance in 3/4 time, the passacaglia later came to be a instrumental work in 3/4 based on a ground (that is, a melody which repeats unchangingly throughout while other lines are freely varied). The passacaglia is very closely related to the chaconne, except that in the chaconne, the repeating melody is always in the bass (that is, it is a ground bass). One of the best known examples of a passacaglia in classical music is the one in C minor for organ by Johann Sebastian Bach, BWV 582. A later example is the finale of Josef Rheinberger's 8th organ sonata. Perhaps the most
Alfred Brendel
old Brendel was sent to Yugoslavia to dig trenches. However, he caught frostbite and was taken to hospital. Throughout his childhood, Brendel had occasional piano lessons, but otherwise little formal music education. After the war, Brendel composed music, as well as continuing to play the piano and paint. He never had any more formal piano lessons, however, and although he did attend masterclasses with Edwin Fischer and Eduard Steuermann, he is largely self-taught. Brendel gave his first public recital in Graz at the age of seventeen. He called it "The Fugue In Piano Literature", and as well as fugal works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahms and Franz Liszt, it included some of Brendel's own compositions. However, he gave up composing shortly after this to concentrate on the piano. In 1949
Karl Richter
to Munich where he taught at conducted the Munich Bach Choir and Munich Bach Orchestra. He conducted a wide range of music, but is best remembered today for his interpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach music. He avoided the fluctuations in tempo which was one characteristic of the prevailing Romantic manner of conducting Bach, but otherwise made no attempt to be historically authentic in his performances, using modern instruments right to the end of his career.
