About Bach
Matthew Passion (excerpts include Herzliebster Jesu; Erbarm' dich Mein Gott, and O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden), written for Easter and other high holy days. In his own life Bach was known more as a virtuoso organist and improviser and he was considered learned but eccentrically old fashioned as a composer what with his obsessions with arcania such as fugue and ricercar. The miracle of these pieces is that the overwhelming intellectual mastery is always in the service of an even higher emotional character and spirit, explored with unending variety.

Newport News-Times: New York concerto performer opens Sunday Piano Series at the Performing Arts Center
Pirone received his bachelor of music degree from Queens College, where he studied with Leon Pommers. He later won a scholarship to The Julliard School and completed his master's degree under Joseph Raieff. It was at Julliard that Pirone was first given Bach's "Organ Prelude in Fugue," transcribed for piano by Liszt, as a concert piece - and the piece with which he will open the June 12 concert in Newport. "Joseph Raieff assigned it to me and said one day it would be a great program opener; it is, and I have used it before," Pirone said. Following Julliard, Pirone took a two-year break before earning his Ph.D. from New York University.

(The application was not successful.) The concertos have little in common;
