Newport News-Times: New York concerto performer opens Sunday Piano Series at the Performing Arts Center
Pirone received his bachelor of music degree from Queens College, where he studied with Leon Pommers. He later won a scholarship to The Julliard School and completed his master's degree under Joseph Raieff.
It was at Julliard that Pirone was first given Bach's "Organ Prelude in Fugue," transcribed for piano by Liszt, as a concert piece - and the piece with which he will open the June 12 concert in Newport.
"Joseph Raieff assigned it to me and said one day it would be a great program opener; it is, and I have used it before," Pirone said.
Following Julliard, Pirone took a two-year break before earning his Ph.D. from New York University.

“Music in Time,” Spoleto Festival USA’s 15-year-old series of contemporary classical music, is no doubt ambitious. But founder John Kennedy has said that while the series shakes up listeners, it’s more than 12-tone music and nonstop cacophony. It’s accessible. It’s beautiful. It’s emotional.
François Couperin
XIV. Many of these "concerts", as the titles read, were in the form of suites for Violin, Viol, Oboe, Bassoon, and Harpsichord of which he was a virtuoso player. Couperin acknowledged his debt to Corelli, whose trio sonata form Couperin introduced to French music. The title of Couperin's grand trio sonata, by which it is best known, is 'The Apotheosis of Corelli' ('l'Apothéose de Corelli'). His most famous book, L'Art de toucher le clavecin (published 1716), contained executions for fingerings, touch, ornamentation and other features of keyboard technique. It is said to have had great influence on Bach. Many of Couperin's keyboard pieces have evocative picturesque titles and express a mood through key choices, adventurous harmonies and (resolved) discords. These features attracted Richard Strauss, who orchestrated some of them.
Chaconne
Chaconne The chaconne is a form of music. Originally a kind of dance in a slow 3/4 time which first emerged in the 16th century and which is probably of Spanish provenance, the word was later applied to any work in 3/4 consisting of a set of variations over a never-changing bass (a ground bass). One of the best known examples is the chaconne from Johann Sebastian Bach's second partita for solo violin (the bass line is not always present in this work, but it is strongly implied). Bach's Goldberg Variations are also frequently reckoned to be a chaconne, although Bach did not explicitly label them as such. After the baroque period, the chaconne form was not often used, though the 32 Variations in C minor by Ludwig van

Classical music era
Classical music era The classical music era in Western music occurred in the second half of the 18th century. Although the term classical music is used as a blanket term meaning all kinds of music in a certain tradition, it can also mean this particular era within that tradition. The classical music era falls between the Baroque and the Romantic periods. Amongst its earliest composers were Joseph Haydn and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The best known composer from this period is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The last classical composers are generally taken to be Ludwig van Beethoven, who after writing in a classical style in his early works, pushed its conventions and forms into new territory, and Franz Schubert, who served as a bridge between the Classical and
