About Rodgers and Hammerstein
It is also based on a true story, about a young novice nun who becomes the governess for seven children of a widower, Captain Von Trapp. The show also won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 1944. The story is partly fun, but it has a serious side too.

The Sound of Music
of the von Trapp story were altered for the play and the film. The real Maria was sent to be nurse to one of the children, not governess to all of them. The Captain's eldest child was a boy, not a girl, and the names of the children were changed (at least partly to avoid confusion, as the Captain's eldest daughter was also called Maria). The von Trapps spent some years in Austria after Maria and the Captain married - they did not have to flee right away; and they fled to Italy, not to Switzerland. The Sound of Music, with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse, opened on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on November 16, 1959, and

USS Washington (1814)
sailed for Boston on 3 December 1815. In the spring of the following year, the ship-of-the-line shifted to Annapolis, Maryland, and arrived there on 15 May 1816. Over the ensuing days, the man-of-war welcomed a number of distinguished visitors who came on board to inspect what was, in those days, one of the more powerful ships afloat. The guests included Commodore John Rodgers and Capt. David Porter, Col. Franklin Wharton, the Commandant of the Marine Corps, and President and Mrs. James Madison. The Chief Executive and his lady came on board "at half past meridian, to visit the ship, on which occasion yards were manned and they were saluted with 19 guns and three cheers." Washington then sailed down Chesapeake Bay and embarked William Pinckney and his suite on 5 June.

USS Idaho (BB-42)
July 1920 Idaho took part in fleet maneuvers off the California coast and as far south as Chile. She continued this important training until 1925, taking part in numerous ceremonies on the West Coast during the interim. Idaho took part in the fleet review held by President Warren Harding in Seattle shortly before his death in 1923. The battleship sailed 15 April 1925 for Hawaii, participated in war games until 1 July, and then got underway for Samoa, Australia, and New Zealand. On the return voyage Idaho\ embarked gallant Commander John Rodgers and his seaplane crew after their attempt to fly to Hawaii, arriving San Francisco, California, on 24 September 1925. For the next six years Idaho operated out of San Pedro, California, on training and readiness operations off California and
