About Broadway
The best musicals have three essential qualities – Brains – intelligence and style, Heart – genuine and believable emotion, Courage – the guts to do something creative and exciting. While the razzmatazz of Broadway appeals to a mass audience, some theatergoers prefer the more experimental, challenging, and intimate performances possible in smaller theaters elsewhere in Manhattan. It is closely related to opera, being distinguished by the use of popular music of various forms, and the use of non-sung dialogue (though some musicals are entirely sung, and some operas have spoken dialogue, such as Carmen), and the avoidance of many operatic conventions.

'Light in Piazza' shines at Tony Awards
NEW YORK - "The Light in the Piazza," a tale of young love in Old Europe, took five Tony Awards on Sunday, including best score for composer Adam Guettel, as Broadway celebrated the best of a busy theater season. "This is the just the most incredible day of my entire life, period. It always will be a highlight no matter what happens," said Guettel, the grandson of legendary composer Richard Rodgers. "Piazza" also won for sets, costumes and lighting in the musical design categories as well as for orchestrations. "The Pillowman" won two design/play awards: for sets and lighting. King of Hearts Based on the 1966 anti-war movie about a naive young soldier who becomes involved with the escaped inmates of a French lunatic asylum on the final day of World War I, this stage adaptation sets out to capture the film's whimsical, Fantasticks-like tone. But by the time it reached Broadway in 1978, it had morphed into an overcostumed, overstaged, unwieldy mess and quickly flopped.
