Musicals - Find News and Resources
Musical comedy 'Guys and Dolls' comes to GLT stage
Case in point: the bubbly Broadway musical "Guys and Dolls," which opens at Greenville Little Theatre on Friday night.
The multiple Tony Award-winning musical about gamblers and love premiered in 1951 and ran 1,200 performances. It's considered the best work of famed American lyricist Frank Loesser. Through the show's 50-some years, it has morphed into a 1955 movie with Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra, plus four revivals - one per decade from the 1960s through the 1990s.
"It's one of the greatest American musicals. It has everything from comedy to LOVE," says Kimberly Ferreira, co-director of the GLT performance.
Sparkling 'Guys and Dolls' a winner at GLT
Greenville Little Theatre's sparkling production of "Guys and Dolls" underscores the fact, if anyone needed reminding, that Frank Loesser's 1950 show about gamblers and Bible thumpers is one of Broadway's most vital and effervescent shows.
With a talented cast of faces familiar to GLT audiences, the production that opened Thursday night is thoroughly winning: bright, brash, dance-happy and meticulously staged by co-directors Allen McCalla and Kimberlee Ferreira.
This is a show you can't help but love - with its corny jokes, witty lyrics and memorable tunes.
