'Phantom' in Seoul signals a shif in marketing strategy of musicals
Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera," the blockbuster that touched off a sizzling musicals boom here, will wow Korean audiences again at Seoul Arts Center's Opera House from June 10 to Sept. 1.
As expected, the renowned show is creating another boom: tickets for June have almost been sold out and the remaining tickets are showing reservation rates of more than 60 percent.
What's unexpected, though, is the way producers and organizers promote this 9.8-billion-won project. Unlike other big-budget musicals that rely heavily on TV ads to promote their shows, "Phantom" does not have any media partner.
Phantom of the Opera
There had never been anything like it in local theater history. Until The Lion King came to town, there never would be anything like it again.
Phantom grossed more than $10 million during its initial nine-week run, a figure that wasn't topped until the Disney musical roared through Tempe this past season.
Once apparently was not enough for the "phanatics," as the show's more rabid fans are known. The Andrew Lloyd Webber megamusical has returned to Gammage twice, upping its box-office take to a cumulative $25 million.

While the original legislative charter was granted in 1820, construction began in 1822, the first professor was hired in 1823, and classes were offered in 1824. The first class graduated in 1830. The school developed rapidly in its first years. The hiring of Andrew Wylie, its first president, in 1828 signified the school's growing professionalism. The General Assembly changed the school's name to "Indiana College" in the same year. In 1838 the legislature changed the school's name for a final time to Indiana University. Wylie's death in 1851 marks the end of the university's first period of development. IU now had nearly a hundred students and seven professors. Despite the university's more obviously

Me On A Sunday, a concert for theatre, starring Marti Webb. The dance numbers from act two originated on an album Lloyd Webber wrote for his brother, Julian Lloyd Webber. The title was changed and Sarah Brightman was put in the role of "Emma" for a television special. The original concept of Tell Me On A Sunday has since been resorted and it reopened in London in April of 2003 starring Denise Van Outen. It was still running as of September, 2003.
