Garden concert series kicks off July 3
The Oregon Garden 2005 summer concert series presented by the Wooden Nickel Pub and Eateries gets underway July 3 and continues through Aug. 25.
"We have rented the amphitheater from the Garden so we know they will be successful," said Glen Damewood, owner of Mac's Place and the Wooden Nickel. "And based on the acts we have lined up, the series should be a success for us as well."
Damewood said it was his goal to bring a series rich in musical diversity to the Garden, and he feels that has been accomplished.
Tone poets (The Boston Phoenix)
First there’s the quick thud thwack of a trap kit. Then a plectrum scrapes across nickel-plated steel strings, a low piano key is plunked, and a few craggy guitar strings strike a chord that’s at once muted.

American Beauty (album)
by the Grateful Dead, released in November of 1970 (see 1970 in music). The cover can also read American Reality. The mostly-acoustic album is beloved by fans as perhaps the highest-quality studio recording by the band (along with Workingman's Dead), who are known primarily for their live shows. "Truckin'"/"Ripple" was released as a single. American Beauty peaked at #30 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart (North America), while the single, "Truckin'" peaked at #64 on the Pop Singles chart. American Beauty was the second album released in 1970, after Workingman's Dead. Both albums were extremely innovative at the time for their fusion of bluegrass, rock and roll, folk music and, especially, country music. Like Workingman's Dead, the album did not include any guitar solos from Jerry Garcia. The band's influences can be
Phil Lesh
from 1965 to 1995. Lesh started out as a trumpet player with a keen interest in avant-garde classical music and free jazz; he studied under the Italian modernist Luciano Berio (a classmate was the minimalist composer Steve Reich). While still a college student he met then-bluegrass banjo player Jerry Garcia. They formed a friendship and eventually Lesh was talked into becoming the bass guitarist for Garcia's new rock group, then known as the Warlocks. He joined them for their third or fourth gig (memories vary) and stayed until the end. Lesh had never played bass before joining the band, which meant he learnt "on the job", but also meant he had no preconceived attitudes about the instrument's traditional "rhythm section" role. Indeed, he has said that his playing style was influenced
Be Good Tanyas
Frazey Ford The Be Good Tanyas are a Canadian traditional music group, with influences in folk, country and bluegrass. The group, which comprises Frazey Ford (guitar, vocals), Samantha Parton (guitar, mandolin, banjo, vocals) and Trish Klein (guitar, banjo, vocals), was formed in British Columbia and played their first concerts in Vancouver in the late 1990s. In 2000 they embarked on a North American tour that ran from Vancouver to New Orleans, before returning to BC to record their first album Blue Horse, supposedly in a shack. The record, which combined old-time music standards such as "Oh Susannah" and "The Lakes Of Pontchartrain" with self-penned songs like "The Littlest Birds (sing the prettiest songs)", was well received in the folk-roots movement and highly praised for the quality of the harmony vocals and
