Its lonesome tales of home and farm life and its jubilant, foot-stomping rhythms form an essential core of Americana, but bluegrass music isn t as old as most people think.

Getting to know bluegrass brings musical rewards (Tacoma News Tribune)
This is how it begins:

Jerry Garcia
aborted career in the US army, he became involved in the psychedelic revolution and subsequent musical movement brewing in the San Francisco Bay area in the mid 1960s. Jerry Garcia's outlet was music, and his subsequent involvement with the Grateful Dead was to see his fame burgeon. From 1965-1995 the band toured almost constantly, developing a fan base, known as Deadheads, renowned for its intensity and devotion. In addition to the Grateful Dead, he had numerous side projects. The most notable being the Jerry Garcia Band which had a variety of several different groupings of musicians, often described as Jerry Garcia Band, Legion of Mary, Reconstruction, and finally The Jerry Garcia Band, he also was involved with various acoustic vehicles such as Old and In the Way, and other Bluegrass bands,

Gilles Apap
Apap is a violinist. He plays gypsy music, swing, Irish music, and bluegrass music, as well as the masterpieces of classical music. Born in Bougie, Algeria on May 21, 1963, he was raised in Nice, France. In 1985 he won the first prize in the contemporary music category at the Yehudi Menuhin Competition. He released a CD with Sony Classical in 1996 called Gilles Apap & the Transylvanian Mountain Boys. He has worked as the concertmaster of the Santa Barbara Symphony in California. On his own label, Apapaziz, he has released Enescu, Debussy and Ravel: violin sonatas and, on Appassionato No Piano On That One in 2001. Apap has said "To play all the styles of music, its  a real pleasure, a relaxation that classical musicians hardly understand. In classical music,

Phish
version Phish, a US rock band, was formed in 1983 (1983 in music) at the University of Vermont by guitarist/vocalist Trey Anastasio, rhythm guitarist Jeff Holdsworth, and drummer Jonathan Fishman, later joined by bassist Mike Gordon. Jeff soon left the band (he found religion) and Page McConnell joined on keys, finalizing the lineup. Phish began playing at local clubs in Burlington, and their live shows gained a reputation for extended improvisational jams. Their musical ethos is a playful mix of skilled improvisation, psychedelic rock, folk, bluegrass, funk, a capella/barbershop quartet, and intricate compositions. Some of their original compositions (such as "Theme from the Bottom" and "Farmhouse") tend towards a psychedelic-rock and bluegrass fusion, with more rock and funk elements than the Grateful Dead and other earlier jam bands. Their more epic

Phil Lesh
from 1965 to 1995. Lesh started out as a trumpet player with a keen interest in avant-garde classical music and free jazz; he studied under the Italian modernist Luciano Berio (a classmate was the minimalist composer Steve Reich). While still a college student he met then-bluegrass banjo player Jerry Garcia. They formed a friendship and eventually Lesh was talked into becoming the bass guitarist for Garcia's new rock group, then known as the Warlocks. He joined them for their third or fourth gig (memories vary) and stayed until the end. Lesh had never played bass before joining the band, which meant he learnt "on the job", but also meant he had no preconceived attitudes about the instrument's traditional "rhythm section" role. Indeed, he has said that his playing style was influenced
